Switch dominated January 2019, Kingdom Hearts 3 shared spotlight

Nintendo Switch Has Surpassed 32 Million Units Sold

According to the recent release of monthly financial results for different companies, as well as NPD sales numbers,we now know what consoles and game software performed the best in January 2019.

These strong numbers are also reflected in the overall sales numbers for the portable console. The Switch has already managed to shift tens of millions of hardware units, more than 32 million specifically, since it’s launch. That massive sales volume allowed the portable console to dominate the month.

“Nintendo Switch was the best-selling hardware platform of January 2019. Both in dollar and unit sales,” NPD analyst Mat Piscatella said. “Switch was the only console platform to show year-on-year sales growth.”

The one black spot for hardware numbers this month was the decline in sales generated overall. Compared to the same period last year hardware spending declined declined 28 percent to a total of $199 million overall. That’s still a great number though, but it’s a fair bit removed from the January 2014 high of $239 million in hardware sales.

On the software front, it was a great month for a variety of companies and their games.  The top three slots in terms of sales are Kingdom Hearts III, followed by Resident Evil 2 in second. Kingdom Hearts III is the leader that no one is really surprised by. The mainline continuation of the Disney-heavy crossover RPG has been more than a decade in the making, and fans really freaking wanted to play it. The RE Engine-powered remake is already being billed as one of the best games of the year, and an amazing survival horror title, so that’s no big shocker that the remake took second. New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe is a bit of surprise, the re-release has already overtaken the original Wii U version by about 1/3rd in terms of revenue generated.
