Super Smash Bros. Ultimate reveals Assist Trophies

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Assist Trophies Trailer

Nintendo has announced that Assist Trophies are returning with 59 total NPCs in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

The list of characters is massive, and includes both first-party and third-party franchises. There’s big names like Shadow the Hedgehog and Isaac. Isaac is from the Golden Sun series by the way. These two existed in a similar state in previous Smash games, but they’re joined by a ton of new additions.

Some of the highlights include Yuri Kozukata from Fatal Frame, Black Knight from Fire Emblem, a Thwomp from Super Mario, Spring Man from ARMS, and Dr. Wily from Mega Man. And that’s just the beginning. Retro characters like Akira from Virtua Fighter make an appearance as well.

Assist Trophies are a previous gameplay mechanic in the franchise which allows players to score points by eliminating these special summons. Assist Trophies can be defeated by opponents, but whoever summoned the Assist Trophy can strategically deny that elimination by taking out the Trophy character themselves.

In other Smash Bros. news, Nintendo also revealed that Incineroar is a new addition to the roster. The recent Nintendo Direct also announced a new Spirit Battles singleplayer mode. Nintendo also plans to release new batches of Amiibos inspired by Smash characters.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate launches on December 7, 2018, exclusively on the Switch. You can check out the reveal trailer for the assist trophies down below.
