Subnautica dev acquired by PUBG parent company

Subnautica developer, Unknown Worlds, will be acquired by the parent company behind PUBG. It’s a very surprising bit of news, and it would seem that fans and the companies are both excited about it. PUBG parent company KRAFTON has also bought out various other gaming properties, with this deal being their latest. The total count now stands at six studios having been bought out.

As for the new subsidiary, things are looking bright. The developer’s most well-known game is Subnautica, which debuted in 2014. Erlier this year, the dev released the follow-up to Subnautica, called Subnautica: Below Zero.

The terms of the deal were not fully disclosed. We do know that the studio will continue to maintain its overall independence, with the full support of the publisher. Both parties seem very excited about the whole deal.

“Unknown Worlds are incredibly skilled and passionate developers with an unparalleled gift for creativity and a proven track record of building successful player-driven worlds.” said CH Kim, CEO of KRAFTON, Inc.

And on the other side, the eagerness is apparent as well. “It was immediately apparent how closely Unknown Worlds and KRAFTON are aligned in the way we think about games and game development,” said Charlie Cleveland, CEO of Unknown Worlds. “Subnautica and PUBG both started humbly and evolved successfully through constant iteration and feedback. We want to bring new games to the world stage – and with KRAFTON, we’re a big step closer. We’re truly looking forward to our future together.”

As for the future, that’s currently unknown. In a statement to GamesBeat, Krafton says the developer is currently making “a new genre-defining game, which is slated to launch into early access in 2022.”
