Starsector 0.95.1a Overview and Patch Notes

Starsector

Starsector 0.95.1a is here, bringing with it a ton of new fixes and updates to Fractal Softworks’ iconic space sim. Since this is a 0.1 update, there are more bugfixes than anything else going on. But that doesn’t mean the developers are skimping on juicy changes. One of the bigger elements of this patch is the inclusion of a skill system revamp.

All of the skills in Starsector pretty much received some kind of balance pass this patch cycle. There is way too much to cover here, but trust me when I say that every skill either got a numerical balance pass or more substantive changes. The developer’s goal seemed to be to take all four skill branches and make them both distinct and appealing for different playstyles. And judging by community reaction to Starsector 0.95.1a, they succeeded.

Other areas of the game that got tweaked will be of interest to players as well. Starsector’s overworld and missions structure has been a source of both frustration and broken strategies for a while now, Starsector 0.95.1a aims to fix some of that. There have been some tweaks to mission availability and XP sources, for one thing. Scuttling ships with s-mods you’ve built in will now grant bonus XP. Also, players won’t get certain production missions at their colony anymore, no more busted free fleets.

The campaign map AI has been improved a fair bit as well. The aim here is to complement the skill system changes by doing things like making it harder to get through the levels, as the developers adjusted the XP needed to get to level 5, among other things. There was also a balance pass on AI officers that makes it harder to find high-level officers in some events. There is now the possibility to retrain AI officers once they reach max level, so it’s not as much of a frustration. The AI will even cargo scan you now if they detect you might be smuggling.

And just to add something sweeter, modding support has been expanded into new areas of the game’s code.
