Spelunky 2 Delayed Until 2020

Spelunky 2 is delayed until 2020 to avoid crunch according to its developer and creator, Derek Yu. The developer was very apologetic to fans who were looking forward to the project, but at least he has some good news and a good reason.

According to the announcement, which can be seen below, the game is mostly on track and is proceeding through development well enough, but there’s a lot more depth and technical demands that need to be satisfied with the sequel. That translates to needing a little more time to polish the game up ahead of release.

This extra time in the oven should allow for a much higher quality game on release, as there’s lots more detail that can be fleshed out in the intervening time. No release date has been confirmed as of yet, though Yu was careful to point out that fans will the first to know when one does get finalized.

And as one final teaser, Yu added as a final comment, ‘all the crazy stuff we’re adding makes me buzz with excitement’. We might be able to expect a lot more hidden depth for this game compared to the first. And given how excellent of a game the first title was, I think we’re in for a pleasant surprise.

You can check out the title in action in the gameplay trailer down below. Spelunky 2 will be released on PlayStation 4 and PC in 2020.
