Mossmouth, the studio behind the original and quite wonderful Spelunky has some new footage to show of the upcoming sequel. Mossmouth, or Derek Yu, is developing the rogue-like platformer as an improvement upon the original game. So if you enjoyed the treasure-hunting and other challenges, Spelunky 2 may be a great pickup for you.
The sequel does just what you would expect, by expanding on the dangerous environments, mountains of baddies and shovelfuls of loot from the original game to deliver on the best experience for fans. We get to see a tease of this in the trailer. This new game stars Ana Spelunky, the daughter of the original Spelunky protagonist, as she joins a whole new adventure with a new, and much larger, group of friends. Margaret Tunnel, Colin Northward, and Roffy D. Sloth are all playable characters and important to the story. Players who partake in the online multiplayer will be able to choose from these and other characters for their games.
And the sequel isn’t skimping on backend upgrades either. Fluid physics have been improved, leading to much better looking lava and other fluid traps. The environments themselves also look much smoother overall.
Spelunky 2 is due for release in 2019 for PC and PS4, though a firm release date has yet to be announced. Check out said gameplay trailer down below. Learn more about the game at the official website.
