Sony is ending production of several PlayStation 4 models

A new post has revealed that the PlayStation 4 will no longer be manufactured by Sony.  The five models that are being discontinued are hinting that the base model PS4 is leaving production. The normal color variants of the consoles, jet black and glacier white, are being pulled from production. this means that folks will be hard-pressed to find a new PS4 come real soon. The news was spotted online and has quickly been shared.

The news was confirmed online as consumers posted a notice from a Japanese retailer pointing out that five different PlayStation 4 models will be removed from sale. The models noted are mostly base level PlayStation 4 consoles, with a single variant of the PS4 Pro also getting caught up in the mess. This means that Sony will likely focus on producing new PS4 Slim consoles going forward. So if you’re looking to get a PS4, you’re going to have to get one of those, or go for a used console.

The same lack of stock of these models has been noted in US retailers as well, as many folks have pointed out. That means this isn’t a regional thing and is likely going to mean PS4s will be much harder to get new going forward. Expect to see some weird pricing for base model consoles for a bit.

The PlayStation 5 is very hard to find, so it seems like Sony is pushing more effort into getting more of the console onto the market. The PlayStation 5 is probably still going to be difficult to find though. Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO, Jim Ryan, spoke out that the company is working on the issue. So what’s going to happen? That’s harder to say.

“One of our tasks — probably our main task — is to take that community and transition it from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5, and at a scale and pace that we’ve never delivered on before,” said Ryan. There will be a delay obviously, but it’s pretty clear that the console manufacturer is moving around the priorities to make things better.

The overall trend seems to be that since the PS5 can play nearly all PS4 games, it’s just better to go for that if you can afford it.
