Sign-Ups for the Phantasy Star Online 2 closed beta are up

Phantasy Star Online 2 Will Finally Release in the West

I remember spending a lot of time on Phantasy Star Online during the Dreamcast days. It was one of the first MMOs that I ever spent any serious time with. And for many, myself included, it managed to kindle a passion for MMOs. So it’s with great glee that many fans are excited to know that the Phantasy Star Online 2 closed beta is now open for applicants.

The Xbox team today announced that sign-ups for the Phantasy Star Online 2 closed beta are available today. You can sign up for it right now by following the steps on the game’s official website. The beta is currently locked to certain users via the Xbox Insider program, so there’s no guarantee that you will get access right away. There are also a few restrictions to keep in mind. The beta is only open to those in US and Canada, and is exclusive to the Xbox One at this time.

And if you’re curious and not quite sure if you want to check it out, here’s a synopsis from Microsoft:

In Phantasy Star Online 2, you are a member of ARKS, a task force dedicated to exploring numerous planets and protecting the universe against a malignant force called the Falspawn. Embark on a never-ending assortment of missions with fellow operatives and experience unparalleled action RPG combat, completely free to play.

There’s a few steps to applying for access though, so we will have to jump through some hoops. First, you need the Xbox Insider Hub app. Go here to download it from the Microsoft store. After that, here are the steps to accessing the Phantasy Star Online 2 closed beta:

  • Launch the Xbox Insider Hub from your Xbox One or Windows 10 PC.
  • For those visiting this application for the first time, accept the Terms of Use agreement.
  • Go to Content and select Phantasy Star Online 2 from the list of games.
  • Select “Join” to register for early sign-up.

Once that’s done, you’re ready to begin once the beta goes live.

The Phantasy Star Online 2 closed beta is due to start soon. The original version of  Phantasy Star Online 2 debuted in Japan in 2012, and is finally coming West years later. The MMO has been very popular, getting a wide array of ports over the years. It remains as a popular title in Japan that got releases for the PlayStation Vita in 2013, and then the PlayStation 4 in April 2016, and a Nintendo Switch version in April 2018.

It’s hard to say when Phantasy Star Online 2 closed beta starts, but we should all bet on soon. The full game releases in the West in Spring 2020.
