Rod Fergusson leaving The Coalition to join Blizzard

Activision Layoffs “in the Hundreds” Are Coming

A legendary name at current Gears of War developer The Coalition is about to jump ship. In an announcement on Twitter, Rod Fergusson, the head of the development studio, announced that he was moving on. Earlier this month the legendary game developer announced his intention to move on to a new project. ” I leave Gears in the great hands of The Coalition and can’t wait for everyone to play Gears Tactics on April 28.”

Fergusson began his long career in the tech and games industry at Microsoft in 1996, before moving through various other jobs. In 2005, he moved over to Epic Games, beginning his journey within the Gears of War franchise. The developer served as executive producer and director of production for various games in the franchise. He has also previously worked with Irrational Games on Bioshock Warfare.

And where is he going I hear you ask, the answer is Blizzard. And yes, he will be working on Diablo 4. The departure will occur next month in March 2020.

The game industry execs who had worked with Rod Fergusson all had very positive things to say about this development.

In an interview with GamesIndustry International, head of Xbox Game Studios Matt Booty has wished “all the best for Rod,” and said that “he has a huge amount of passion for the game and has shown a real devotion to the players and the community.” Another major name at Microsoft echoes these ideas, “Thank you for the passion and effort you’ve brought to Gears and Xbox and the work you’ve done to build the world-class team at The Coalition,” Phil Spencer said. “Best of luck on your next journey.”

Halo studio 343 Industries’ CEO was happy with the announcement too, wishing Rod Fergusson well after 15 years of acquaintance.
