In other news, let’s talk about the significant tonal shift the remake is undertaking compared to the original. The gameplay mechanics and level design have received a major upgrade, and the visuals have too. The much more intimate camera and tighter quarters make the gameplay much more tense. The third-person perspective plays well with the labyrinthian police department, making exploration feel unsettling and claustrophobic; gone are the door-opening loading screens.

All of this and more combines to make Resident Evil 2’s remake feel like a much more dangerous game. The journey through the RPD and other game areas feels much more desperate. The tiny control adjustments make the combat even with simple zombies much more intense as they start to close in. The fact that the number of enemies has also been ratcheted up makes this even more frightening.

There’s also a much deeper focus on exploration. Borrowing from the hidden item mechanics from Resident Evil 7, there’s lots of little nooks and crannies to crawl through looking for anything that can help you survive. The player is constantly having to comb through levels looking for items, and it adds an extra layer of depth and freedom to the game.

Overall, I’m really excited to play to play the remake, let me know in the comments if you are too.
