Everwild, the newest game from Sea of Thieves developer Rare, has just been revealed for X019. The company has also worked on classics like Donkey Kong Country and Goldeneye 007, and this new IP is a pretty big step in a new direction for them. It’s actually a pretty unique look, with some outlets comparing the art style to indie titles like Ori and the Blind Forest. But don’t let the looks fool you, the project will be breaking away from the platformer groundings of that title, to tell an entirely new story in a fantastical setting.
The new game has a very different visual look and gameplay style the previous projects from this studio, so don’t go in expecting more of the same. Everwild will be more focused on exploration and discovery than about combat and competition. The highly-colorful environs of the forest surrounding the player are teeming with new life, and it looks like it’s up to the player to find them.
There’s multiple forms of flora and fauna, each with a very distinct style, and the player characters look to be journeying through this idyllic land in search of something. It’s possible that the player is controlling an adventuring party of some kind, but this definitely isn’t a typical RPG.
And don’t worry, Rare will not be abandoning other games, as Rare’s multiple teams will allow it to continue working on other titles while Evewild in development. So don’t expect Sea of Thieves to go dormant anytime soon.
