PUBG is all over the place this week

PUBG

So there’s no denying that both PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite are great games with very engaging gameplay. But unfortunately for PUBG, its lack of polish is starting to work against it. The developers admitted in a ‘Dev Letter‘ to fans that they’ve missed the mark on quality for the game. The developer is now attempting to remedy the situation by unveiling a slew of key improvements for PUBG, with priority given to performance, server-side optimization, and cheating.

Whether the team manages to deal with the consistent performance issues and cheaters remains to be seen, but they have a long road ahead of them.

Performance issues and missed targets aren’t the only thing that has PUBG in the headlines this week either. PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds developer PUBG. Corp is suing the Korean branch of Epic Games, accusing the Fortnite creator of copying elements of their popular battle royale title.

No further details are available at this time, with The Seoul Central District Court acting as the deciding entity, it will likely be some time before a decision is reached on the matter. And while there are undeniable similarities between the two titles, there are enough varying elements to make a compelling case against the claimed copyright infringement as well. One such example that’s consistently referenced in the reporting on the legal case is the massive distinction between the visual styles of both PUBG and Fortnite. It’s also worth mentioning that PUBG runs on Unreal Engine 4, a game engine developed by Epic Games.

Whatever the outcome of this case, unless something unexpectedly catastrophic happens, it looks like Fortnite will continue to dominate the ongoing popularity contest within the battle royale genre.

In other PUBG news, the developer is bringing a new map back into public testing this week. PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds‘ Sanhok map returns to its ‘Experimental Server’ this week. Once known as Codename Savage, the tropical 4x4km arena enters test servers on May 31 at 7pm PST/ June 1 at 3am BST, and wraps up on June 4 at 4am PST/ 12 noon BST.

So it looks like Bluehole and PUBG Corp. will continue to claw and bite their way to success against the juggernaut that is Fortnite, by any means necessary.
