Since the initial teaser, and a handful of news bits from Niantic and Warner Brothers, the upcoming release of the collaborations between the Harry Potter universe and Pokemon Go developer Niantic Inc has been met with tons of speculation and hype. Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is finally getting something more substantial for fans to feast on.
A new post on the game’s website has given us a first look at the story and gameplay in Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. The story places the player into the role of a “new recruit of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force” in which they’ll explore the real world looking for magical traces of “Foundables”. These magical artifacts are the various creatures, characters, and magical effects that tie the game to the source material. And you need to protect the magical world by sending these artifacts back to where they belong.
The core gameplay loop revolves around hunting down these Foundables and then dispelling magic forces protecting them. Players will use Spell Energy to dispell these protective magics and “capture” the artifacts. You’ll need to recharge your spells at Inns using Food and Drink items after a certain number of uses. So all in all, pretty similar to Niantic’s flagship mobile titles.
There’s plenty of other stuff to do as well. Players can travel around and explore famous locations from the Harry Potter series such as Ollivander’s wand shop. You can also craft potions from ingredients you gather out in the world. These ingredients spawn at different times of day under different weather conditions, so heading out to hunt Foundables and potion ingredients will be a pretty long process.
Harry Potter: Wizards Unite still doesn’t have a firm release date, but pre-registration is now open on Google Play for those with Android phones, while iPhone users will have to wait it seems. Learn more about the game by heading to the official site.
