Overwatch is getting its 31st hero, Sigma

Sigma is Live Now on Overwatch PTR

Sigma has been confirmed by Blizzard as the newest hero to join the Overwatch roster, per a new announcement straight from the developer. And in his new origin story, we get to see the ruthless lengths Talon will go to dominate the world.

He’s the 31st Hero added to the shooter, making the roster quite expansive. Prior to Sigma came the combat medic Baptiste. But before these two Heroes came Ana, Ashe, Brigitte, Doomfist, Moira, Orisa, Sombra, and Wrecking Ball. All of these fit into their own archetype, be they Support, Tank or Damage roles. These new roles slot right into the new Role Queue system in Quick Play, currently live on the PTR with plans to roll it out to all platforms. Players will now be able to improve their ranks for each role independently, so a new Tank will definitely help people feel the urge to jump into a role they might not have played before.

Sigma is a Tank, pure and simple. This ties directly into his backstory as well, “Brilliant astrophysicist Dr. Siebren de Kuiper’s life changed forever when an experiment gone wrong gave him the ability to control gravity; now, Talon manipulates him to their own ends.” reads his official overview page. On that same page we also get a look at his gravity-driven abilities.

Check out this gravity-controlling lunatic in the trailer below.

As his lore tells us this brilliant scientist is now being twisted into a freakish engine of destruction. He’s been kitted out with tons of heavy armor over most of his body, allowing him to absorb a fair amount of damage. His damage-dealing abilities kick off hard with his Hyperspheres, a pair of bouncing projectiles that explode in a huge AoE attack. Sigma will also use his gravitational pull to lift and fling both enemies and debris around the map. Expect some clever players to abuse this to stun lock or otherwise immobilize their opponents.

Defensively, a Sigma player can Kinetic Grasp to stop enemy projectiles in mid-air, and then use them to absorb a bit of incoming damage before it hits. There is also an Experimental Barrier which can be called at will to block off an area entirely.

Overwatch is out now on PS4, PC and Xbox One. Sigma is also live now on the PTR for players to try out before he heads into rotation within the live game. Learn more about Sigma from his official Overwatch page.
