Overwatch 2 stormed into the minds of gamers after its surprising reveal this past BlizzCon. The reveal was spoiled by leaks ahead of time, but fans were not any less excited about it. Promising a new and refreshed shooter experience, Blizzard has revealed plans to completely overhaul the game for new fans, but also to maintain what players know and love about the first game.
Speaking to PlayStation Blog, assistant game director Aaron Keller explained that the team behind the not-so-sequel will continue the “incredibly compelling” experience of Overwatch as a franchise. “We’re able to explore so much more of this universe by playing this game in an entirely new way, through missions against AI rather than matches against other players,” said Keller.
The team behind the project is looking to do great things with Overwatch 2. A big area that they’re focusing on is the heroes. The first game already had a rather impressive roster of hero characters, each with their own unique abilities. And Overwatch 2 will be looking to expand on that. And according to the plans we’ve seen, it looks like this sequel will be almost a completely new experience. That’s due to the fact that all of the old heroes will be getting reworks of some kind, while “lots” of new characters with never-before-seen abilities will be added too. “For instance, we like to give the example of Reinhardt’s Talent called ‘Epicenter’, where instead of a cone effect for his Earthshatter ability, it becomes an Earthshatter with a full 360-degree effect around him,” Keller added.
Blizzard has already confirmed that Overwatch 2 will carry forward all of the content from the first game. “never any intention of abandoning that side of the game”, and with all the new players, there’s a lot more new content to come to lure them in. “We’ve got lots of heroes in the works currently for Overwatch 2,” he revealed.
The story is also evolving along with the roster. “The story of Overwatch 2 is the next step of the Overwatch story. You’ve been introduced to the main characters, to the conflicts, and the history of the world, but now we’re moving to the next chapter: Winston has pushed the button and recalled the Overwatch agents to fight against the threats the world faces.”
Sadly, we still don’t have a date for when Overwatch 2 will drop. Kaplan doesn’t know when Overwatch 2 will come out. “I know it’s a lame answer, I’m super sorry, and it’s not like this top-secret thing that the last thing we want to tell players. It’s just that we don’t know,” he said.
