Sony and Team Ninja have revealed more details about their demon-slaying action sequel, Nioh 2. With a newly released trailer, the players and fans get a deeper glimpse into the dangerous world they’re about to embark within. The mysterious Yokai will be ravaging the land, but they are also the key to salvation for those suffering within the demonic tide. The player takes control of a warrior charged with hunting the demons, and using the power of the Yokai to take them down.
Nioh 2 is a prequel to the original Nioh, and this new game will build directly into the original 2017 release. Players are sent back to a much more dangerous and whimsical version of 16th century Japan, it’s the year 1555 and there’s some weird stuff going on. It all seems to be centered around the chaotic and poisonous energy of the Spirit Stones. These ancient artifacts appear to be both tainting the land and spewing forth demonic entities, or at least tied to their spread across Japan. It’s up to the player to figure out what’s going on here.
Nioh 2 has also shown off a few other gameplay elements in previous coverage. We saw early versions of the game ahead of the first round of testing. That early form of the game was all flashy combat, and the feel has allegedly improved a bunch since then.
There are some new details as well, mostly concerning DLC and the plans for the future of the game post-launch. There will apparently be multiple packs of DLC for Nioh 2. Each DLC will introduce new weapons, combat abilities, and characters, as well as a range of main story missions and side missions to play through, each one adding more bits to the story. Players will be able to grab all three of the DLC packs as part of the Season Pass; each DLC pack will also be included in the Digital Deluxe Edition too.
This new game is being built from the ground-up with much more player feedback. Team Ninja even adjusted the game a fair bit based on feedback from the recent beta on PS4. And part of that process involved tweaking every aspect of the gameplay to make combat smoother and more enjoyable.
Nioh 2 will release on PlayStation 4 on March 13th, and it’s up for pre-order now. Pre-ordering will get you the Demon Horde armor set, the Sudama Netsuke charm, a Nioh 2 PlayStation 4 theme, and a PSN avatar set for PlayStation 4.
