Nintendo Switch port of Red Dead Redemption 2 leaked

Switch JoyCon

Earlier this week, we reported on some datamining that found a Switch controller texture in Red Dead Redemption 2. This immediately set off waves of speculation about the potential for a Switch port of the game to be made. Such a move wouldn’t be totally outside the realms of possibility but it would take massive amounts of work to make it run well. There have been all manner of AA, AAA and indie titles on the Switch, and while some run great, others fail miserably.

CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher 3 debuted recently on the console. The Complete Edition runs well on the console, although there are some compromises. The scaling of FPS and resolution is a given in these kinds of open-world games on limited hardware, so set your expectations accordingly. And now, it looks like there’s reason to assume a Switch port of the Rockstar title is coming.

A Spanish game retailer has listed Red Dead Redemption 2 for the Nintendo Switch. The listing appeared on Instant Gaming earlier today, and is still live on the site as of now. No price or release date is listed on the site, other than saying that a release could happen in 2020. That’s quite a huge window and leaves a lot of room for speculation, delays and other problems.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Might Be Heading to Nintendo Switch

It will be interesting to see if this turns out to be true. If it is real, and we are about to get a port of Rockstar’s AAA game for the Nintendo platform, I can’t wait to see how it runs. I really hope it isn’t another WWE 2K18 situation. Red Dead Redemption 2 is a rather massive and graphically beautiful game. Having to scale it down for the Switch would be quite the monumental task. And I don’t think that giving the cowboy adventure the treatment of Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition would work out too well. The tone of the game just doesn’t work as well in Chibi form.

Although if Red Dead Redemption 2 on Switch follows the path laid down by CD Projekt Red and makes an admirable attempt at getting a true-to-form port going on the hardware, it will be a pretty great addition to the portable console’s library.
