New mobile game, Pokemon Masters, announced

During the course of the Pokémon live event last night, itself ahead of the scheduled Pokémon Sword and Shield direct during E3 2019, that there is in fact a new mobile game in the works for iOS and Android devices based on the legendary gaming brand. DeNA is leading the project with some assistance from The Pokémon Company. This same team at DeNA was responsible for mobile games and ports like GODUS, as well as games based on One Piece. The company also worked with Nintendo to release Miitomo in 2016.

It’s currently unclear what kind of specific gameplay experience Pokémon Masters will offer, but that hasn’t stopped fans from getting hype. At the very least, we can expect gameplay more engaging than a sleep tracking app like Pokémon Sleep. Judging from the trailer, we can guess that it will be some kind of team-based battler. In said trailer, iconic trainers like Blue, Brock and Misty battle it out with other trainers. It’s possible the game could make use of just the original 151 Pokémon with the trainer and monster rosters being expanded over time, but this is just speculation.

A simple gameplay trailer for the in-progress mobile title was also released, which can be seen below.

Pokémon Masters is set to release in 2019, but no further details are available at this time. At least this game has the potential of being a hit with turn-based battles and nostalgia fueling it’s potential success. I would certainly give more confidence to this being popular based on the success of titles like Pokémon Quest on Switch and mobile. It does remain to be seen what this game offers beyond simple 3v3 battles, and that we’ll likely learn in due time.

And with the impending release of Switch titles like Detective Pikachu and Pokémon Sword and Shield, this game has some pretty good chances.
