Microsoft has announced a lot of new and returning gaming franchises at E3 2018 this week, and even Gears of War is getting in on the action. Two major announcements concerning the gritty and ultra-violent series came out today during their press conference.
One such announcement is the unveiling of Gears Tactics. This new RTS is currently in pre-alpha, but it looks like a Gears of War take on the turn-based strategy gameplay of the recent XCom games. This new game will also include highly-tactical boss battles as a central gameplay element, so there’s that.
The game will follow the adventures of an entirely new squad, 12 years before the events of Gears of War 1, as they go on the hunt for the Locust forces that are wiping out entire cities.
Not to be left out, hardcore FPS fans got a treat in the form of an extended reveal trailer for Gears of War 5. Not much is known in terms of gameplay yet, but given that it’s a continuation of the main story and probably a shooter, we can make some educated guesses. Until we know more, expect the internet to be awash in hype and rumors.
In an interview with Geoff Keighley that took place following the Microsoft E3 2018 press conference, the general manager of games marketing at Microsoft, Aaron Greenberg, gave fans more of an idea of what they can expect. Greenberg explained that Gears of War 5‘s “different color palette” isn’t the only significant change compared to its predecessors as the new game is also set in a “much bigger, bolder world.”
Here’s the trailer for the next major Gears of War title.
Gears of War 5 is currently in development for Xbox One and is releasing in 2019.
