Mortal Kombat 11’s 30 FPS fatality cap to be removed

Mortal Kombat 11 Frost Trailer

So there’s a bit of weirdness with NetherRealm’s design decisions when it comes to their newest fighting game, Mortal Kombat 11. The change is simple, but it’s something that many gamers proved mad about. The developer put in a simple 30 FPS lock on certain in-game scenes, most notably the montages of violence and blood that are the iconic fatalities in Mortal Kombat 11. Enterprising gamers responded in the most obvious of ways, by modding out said FPS lock and going about their business.

It does make sense that NetherRealm has instituted such a restriction though. Consoles aren’t high-end gaming PCs, and they simply can’t render 60 FPS in every seen. So the game got a 30 FPS lock in some scenes to keep a cohesive feel and image in the PC and console versions. Still, gamers tend to hate FPS locks that don’t serve a purpose which benefits them directly, hence the mods.

Now NetherRealm has announced that they’re working on a patch to the game which removes this lock, and does a bunch of other stuff too. The patch also addresses a handful of bugs across multiple areas in-game. A bunch of crashes and framerate problems have been addressed as well. Some UI elements have been tweaked for one thing, and some backend stuff involving NVIDIA GPU features has been enabled to allow gamers to have more fun.

Mortal Kombat 11 is out now for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch.
