Mortal Kombat 11 announces new roster addition, Kotal Kahn

Kotal Kahn Mortal Kombat 11 Gameplay

The Mayan terror given form that was Kotal Kahn, who debuted in Mortal Kombat X, is returning in the newest iteration of the popular fighting game franchise. This new roster addition was confirmed by NetherRealm Studios during a livestream earlier today.

Kotal Kahn is a denizen of the conquered realm of Osh-Tekk which had been previously conquered by the greedy emperor Shao Kahn. Kotal fled his home and traveled through EarthRealm for a time, developing a cult-like following among Mayan peoples. He eventually returned to Outworld after the death of Shao Kahn, intending to seize power for himself. Shao Kahn had handed power to his tyrannical and insane daughter Mileena, leading Outworld into a period of devastation.  Kotal usurped Mileena’s title of Kahnum and forced her into hiding with the aid of Reptile, D’vorah and others.

During the events of Mortal Kombat X, Kotal became embroiled in a civil war with Mileena and her loyalist forces, a war that eventually unleash the fallen Elder God Shinnok on the Realms. And now, it appears that Kotal is back to seek vengeance for his defeat.

Said livestream also included footage of other characters in the roster of Mortal Kombat 11 in action. One such highlight focused on the spunky and brutal Jacqui Briggs. Yes, the same Jacqui who defeated Kotal Kahn during MKX.

Kotal Kahn’s fighting style is very much a bruiser. Using slow but dangerous strikes, Kotal can simple overpower many opponents. His command throws and combos give a significant temporary damage boost, which can even further improve his chip damage potential. He also uses a sharp and deadly blade as part of his move set to slice and dice his foes in an anti-air attack.

There’s another aspect to Kotal Kahn that’s quite unique, and his totem-based buff mechanics. Kotal has four totems, two of which he can summon at once during a match to gain various boons. Summoning multiple totems can also stack positive effects multiple times. As far as those effects, there’s a blue totem that buffs damage, and a red one that recovers health. Kotal can also make use of a totem to recharge meter.

It will be very interesting to see how Kotal Kahn stacks up against other roster additions like Kabal or Cassie Cage.
