Monolith Soft is hiring for new Legend of Zelda game

Nintendo Switch

So there’s a new Zelda title in the works apparently, as one of the Japanese companies which worked on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is staffing up for a new game in the legendarily famous adventure game franchise.

A post on the Japanese developer’s website advertises a variety of open positions — including programmers, designers and technical artists — all to work on a new entry in the series.

The Japanese company was founded in 1999 and was originally owned by Namco and currently owned by Nintendo. Previously, the developer there helped work on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The company has also worked on a variety of other Nintendo projects, including games in the Animal Crossing and Splatoon franchises. The development house also worked on Xenoblade.

As for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the game has sold more than 12 million copies since it’s launch in 2017 as a flagship title on the Nintendo Switch portable console.

At this point, we don’t have any more information on what this game will be other than it being set in the Zelda canon. We can guess that it will be a fairly big project, as the developer, Monolith Soft, has around 200 employees, and it’s unlikely they would expend the time and resources on a smaller project with even remotely those levels of staff. And since they’re hiring more folks, it’s probably pretty safe to assume that this will be a Switch title at the very least.

In terms of scope, The Legend of Zelda franchise has exploded since it’s debut in Feburary 1986 with the NES. Since that fateful, day nearly 20 different releases have filled the hearts of Nintendo fans with joy with expansive stories, beautifully realized worlds and inventive audio. The original game was a massive success, and the franchise has managed to push millions of copies. And to no one’s surprise, Nintendo revealed that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has sold more than 9 million copies, making it the best selling game in the franchise of all time.

The adventures of Link, Zelda, Ganon and more have become somewhat chaotic and over-the-top over the years though, although that’s just fine with fans. Going from sailing around a fanciful world in Wind Waker, to preventing the moon from crashing into Hyrule in Majora’s Mask, there have been some memorable experiences in the history of this game franchise. I cannot wait to see what Monlith Soft has in store in this new game.

What do you think this new project could be? What’s your favorite title in the franchise? Let us know in the comments.
