After several years, and more than 70 updates on the Xbox 360 alone, 4J Studios has concluded updating the older versions of Minecraft. This means that the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, Xbox 360, and Wii U versions of the game will no longer receive any new patches or updated content.
The open-world adventure title has become a generation-defining titan within the gaming industry over the 6+ years. The Xbox 360 edition launched back in 2012, with PS3 coming to the scene around a year later. PS Vita and Wii U versions dropped in October 2014 and December 2015, respectively.
Since the game launched in 2011, it’s grown to such a huge monolith, that it’s become an inescapable aspect of the gaming industry. Gamers all know what Minecraft is, and it’s helped launched some of the biggest gaming-related careers online, especially on YouTube. I’m sure anyone who has ever played the game has stories and memories about their time with the older versions. I know I do for the Xbox 360 iteration, playing it with some friends online years back.
It’s not all bad news though, alongside this ceasing of active development, there’s been a new themed holiday pack launching for the current versions of the game. Xbox One, Windows 10 Edition, iOS, Android and Nintendo Switch versions of Minecraft gained access to the Nightmare Before Christmas pack which features skins, textures, sounds and other content from the iconic fiction property of Jack Skellington and the world of Halloweentown. Players will get 40 skins, a new texture pack, and a new set of puzzles to solve inside a custom world. If you want to learn more about this latest update, go check out the official site.
