MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries Won’t Support NVIDIA RTX and DLSS at Launch

Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries

Russ Bullock, President of developer Piranha Games spoke with various outlets, notably wccftech, in a pre-launch interview, talking about the future of their newest game, MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries. In particular, there’s been some bad news. The company behind the new action and robots title has now revealed that the launch version of MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries. will not support DLSS and raytracing on Nvidia GPUs at launch.

Deep Learning Super Sampling is a means for RTX GPUs to deliver more efficient performance through a variety of dynamic algorithms. This new system was developed by the green team to create a way for machine learning to help optimize the delivery of assets and post-processing effects. RTX GPUs accomplish this, and the more intense lighting effects of raytracing, using specialized computational cores.

Here’s the statement from Russ Bullock, President of developer Piranha Games:

[…] As to RTX, we just found out yesterday that we’re not going to have RTX at launch. There is a large committed effort to bring RTX to MechWarrior as soon as possible post-release. I am afraid that is all the details I have on the matter as of this time. Since our game release is so close to the Christmas break I would expect there to be an update very early in the new year.

Here’s the relevant excerpt from the related interview:

During our previous conversation, you told us the ray tracing optimization only allowed 1080p@60fps at the time, or 1080p@30fps with reflections enabled as well. Were you able to optimize this further to allow higher resolution gameplay with the ray tracing features enabled, at least on top of the line GPUs such as the RTX 2080 Super and RTX 2080Ti?

We’ve been able to push the resolution ceiling a bit higher, and we’re continuing to work with their RTX team to optimize further. There’s likely to be a few post-release updates to make the experience even better.

Back then, you were just about getting started with NVIDIA DLSS. What kind of performance improvements are you seeing on average?

Paired with RTX the performance improvements are significant.

But don’t despair, even graphics hounds will have some other reasons to grab this new mech game. MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries will support full co-op features, as well as mods, on launch. It’s been a long road to get here though, as MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries has been delayed several times.

The game has been pushing out a fair bit of news this week ahead of its formal launch. Piranha Games just dropped a launch trailer today. This new trailer isn’t the only thing we’ve seen of the new title. The most recent trailer showcased the scenario editor that will allow players to alter map conditions for each match. If you want to see more of the game, there’s tons more trailers. There was some footage showing terrain destruction. And before those delays we mentioned earlier were announced, the developers showed off a full 10 minute snippet of more gameplay. But if you just want to think about smahing giant robots, check out some of the fast and brutal combat.

MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries will release on December 10th.
