The world of comics has lost a legend this week with the passing of the legendary co-creator of many a Marvel Comics characters, Stan Lee is no longer with us. He passed away early Monday morning, according to The Hollywood Reporter. And now, his unique “Excelsior!” catchphrase will surely become a rallying cry for many a comics fan today.
Any fan comics, films and video games knows the works of Stan Lee and Marvel extremely well. A pioneer in his time, Stan Lee crafted some of the most enduring and recognizable characters in fiction, and his contributions can’t be overstated. He helped push comics into a new era, and dragged the entirety of the entertainment industry along with it.
Since he began working in comics in 1939, Stan Lee worked on and helped co-create multiple legendary comic series, many of which went on to even greater heights in films and TV. Just a selection of his credits include: Black Panther, Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Mighty Thor, Iron Man, the Fantastic Four, Daredevil and so many more. Needless to say, but the man was a machine of creativity and inspiration.
During his time with Marvel Comics, he helped bring the company to global dominance in a variety of sectors within the film, TV and video game industries. Marvel and it’s stable of heroes and iconic characters has built some of the most successful franchises within these areas, and Stan Lee’s influence is undeniable.
The saddest part out of all of this is that the final few years of his time on the Earth were marred with controversy. After losing his wife of 69 years in 2017, things turned even further south when a series of legal disputes involving his estate and billions of dollars caused more issues. And it all came to a head when in 2018 it was revealed that the LAPD had been investigation elder abuse allegations against Lee. And despite all of this, he maintained a presence of inspiration within entertainment, bringing many new fans and creators into the fold through his influential work and no-nonsense attitude.
