So there’s some really good news for both hardcore LoL fans and those hoping for a new MMO to whittle away the hours. It turns out that the rumors were true and Riot Games is indeed working on a League of Legends MMO. There have been rumors about such a project for a while, although it’s just now getting confirmed. Riot Games’ VP IP and Entertainment Greg Street has been the one to break the news via Twitter.
“is to kick off a big (some might say massive) game that many of you, and many Rioters, have been asking us to create.” Fans then asked the question that was burning in their minds, about whether or not the game is an MMO, to which he affirmatively responded: “It is an MMO.”
This was later confirmed after fans rushed to Riot for news on the topic. In a statement from the studio’s PR given to PC Gamer, who said “Greg’s tweet is our only official statement at this time. I can confirm that he will be working on a massively multiplayer online role-playing game. (MMORPG).”
League of Legends is a very huge force in gaming and pop culture, it stands to reason that Riot would continue to branch the brand out into more games. Riot has been pushing for their premier title to get even more prominence through a variety of different spin-off titles. And with the huge Esports scene surrounding this game, there’s plenty of fertile ground for an MMO. Given how much cross-over there is between the two hardcore audiences, that’s a good call for them to make.
So far, we don’t know when the title will release, so it could be a few years as there’s been nothing shown off for it. When we do hear more, you’ll be sure to know.
