Is there local multiplayer in Marvel's Avengers?

Local multiplayer split-screen action is a fixture of the hero fighting and brawling genre. The ability to play together on the couch is a very fun and useful way to extend replayability. So there’s a big question, is there local multiplayer in Marvel’s Avengers? After all, who wouldn’t want to play with their pals as the likes of Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Kamala Khan, and Black Widow, taking on legions villainous foes?

So there’s some pretty bad news to be had here. The game also doesn’t support cross-platform play either. This means if your friends are on a different console you won’t be able to play with them, even if it’s in online modes.

So while it’s sad not to have the split-screen gameplay mode in the game, it’s understandable. The game has a bunch of visual effects that would likely bog down the framerate with too many players on one console. It’s a fact that modern games are more intense, and until the release of the next-generation consoles later this year, there’s going to be some sacrifices that need to be made.

As for the future of the game, it’s hard to say. Crossplay is becoming more of a requested feature as time goes on, and there’s a chance that the game could get some extra modes as part of post-launch content, but nothing has been announced yet. Crystal Dynamics has said they plan to support the game for some time, which is nice. You can still play online with your pals though, so there is that.
