Is there an ending in Project Zomboid?

Project Zomboid

Project Zomboid is quite an intriguing zombie game. As a simple isometric adventure, there’s a lot to be found in the hordes of undead, if you can survive. But what’s at the end of that long-term survival. Do you wait to be rescued? Is that rescue ever coming. So what’s the verdict? Is there an ending in Project Zomboid? Let’s find out.

As far as we know, the zombie outbreak starts in Knox County, but there are some events that suggest it has spread globally. Radio and TV transmissions point to infections and zombie outbreaks all over the globe later in the game. The assumption is that the world has ended, and there’s no help coming.

Also, the gameplay loop is clearly designed around dying repeatedly. Multiplayer supports this function, as well as singleplayer. You’re supposed to die and then use a new character to return to that world. Or if you’re tired of what you were doing, start anew.

Can you win?

No, you can’t really win. The intro even says: “This is how you died…” you are supposed to fail. And you might be thinking “what about random events?”

According to some sources, players have lasted months on end against the zombie hordes. The ongoing and constantly shifting nature of the game makes long-term survival very hard, but not impossible. The current record for most players is a few months, with some players lasting around 1 year in-game.

During that time, nothing really changed. Sure, the game fires random events like the helo flyover. But these events are set at game start. You can tweak how long the water and power last. In the real world, there’s very little permanence to water and power systems in disaster scenarios. Players in PZ can make these resources last for months if they want.

Players have dug through the game’s files and found that there’s a pretty set path to random events and the various written occurrences like radio transmissions. Modders have added in new stuff, but no true ending. So in terms of the vanilla game, it’s probably unlikely that there will ever be an ending. You can roleplay or play multiplayer with mods to make something more concrete happen. But in the end, that’s all there is right now. There’s no real ending in Project Zomboid.
