In the Valley of the Gods "On Hold" as Campo Santo Works on Half-Life: Alyx

Sorry Campo Santo fans, but we have some bad news. The studio made famous by creative and experimental games like Firewatch is no longer working on their next game, In the Valley of the Gods. It’s not cancelled though, so take solace in the fact that it might one day come out.

One of Campo Santo’s co-founders, Jake Rodkin, recently sent a statement to Polygon about the status of In the Valley of the Gods. The game is officially “on hold” due to other projects in the works. Campo Santo is currently working with Valve on the recently announced Half-Life: Alyx, which is set to launch in March of next year. The massively popular VR game has been so well-received long before its release date that Valve sold out of the Valve Index hardware for the game in just a few days.

For those wondering why Campo Santo was tapped to assist with the VR project, Rodkin explains that, “our experience in the first-person adventure genre is pretty relevant,” and that they are also working with Valve on other projects too. Most notably, some Campo Santo developers are working on projects related to Dota Underlords and Steam itself.

Rodkin also makes it clear, the on hold project is not dead, it just may take some time. As he said, “it certainly feels like a project people can and may return to. And when that happens, we’ll find an exciting way to let fans know.”

In the Valley of the Gods is not entirely gone though. Campo Santo will be working on it again at some point. Just don’t expect their newest game to come out anytime soon. The game was first announced at The Game Awards 2017, and has been in the works quietly ever since.
