How to use and upgrade Agony Infusions in Guild Wars 2

Guild Wars 2 End of Dragons Guide

Agony Infusions in Guild Wars 2 are one of the most important upgrade paths to your endgame gear, bar none. The main reason to get these infused into your gear is to reduce your overall susceptibility to damage. In short, the higher your Agony infusions in your gear, the less damage you take. It’s best to save Gold to pay for this crafting process for your best gear, as it can be quite expensive. Given that there are 30 levels to Agony Infusions in Guild Wars 2, you can reach some pretty insanely high levels of cost. Keep reading to learn more about this process.

How to get Agony Infusions in Guild Wars 2

The basic idea is that you get the Tier 1 infusion, which offers +1 to your damage resistance by completing lower-level Fractals. You then need to take the basic Infusions and combine them to achieve higher tiers.

1 to 3 +1 Agony Infusions drop from Fractals of the Mists reward chests. This is your first source for infusions but by no means the only one. The most common source beyond the base acquisition is crafting. Artificers can combine two identical Agony Infusions with a Thermocatalytic Reagent to create a single infusion with one additional point. so you can take two +3 Infusions, and combine them to make one +4. This process goes all the way up to the level of +30 Agony Infusions.

They may also be improved by trading with INFUZ-5959, which is located in the Fractals of the Mists. Combining infusions with the merchant is minutely cheaper than with an Artificer, assuming you bought the reagent from the NPC. however, this merchant only offers every other level up to 11, and players seeking to complete some collections, such as Ad Infinitum, will require an artificer to craft the other tiers. So you can only get +3, +5, +7, +9 and +11 Infusions via this method.

What is Thermocatalytic Reagent?

Thermocatalytic Reagent is used pretty heavily by all the gear crafting disciplines, primarily as a tool for parts of Ascended gear. Thermocatalytic Reagent is the core item you need to make any Agony infusions. Thermocatalytic Reagent can be purchased as a stack of 10 for about 15 Silver, from any Master Craftsman NPC. These are the same NPCs that you learn the level 500 recipes from. Also, this item cannot be bought from the NPC trainers for jeweler and scribe disciplines.

This is a very expensive process. For context, a +12 Infusion will need 2,048, 2,047 Reagents, and a base cost of around 31 Gold for the Reagents alone. So you best save up your gold now.

Once you’ve made your Infusions, it’s time to slot them into your gear. Open the Hero panel by pressing and clicking on Equipment. You will then be greeted with your equipment screen. From here, you can put an Infusion into any piece of gear with an open Infusion Slot. You need to look on the left-hand side and see the Infusions you have in your inventory there. Now just right-click the Infusion you wish to use inside your inventory. Confirm your choice now, and make sure to put it into the right piece of gear. If you mess up, you must buy an Infusion Extraction Device from INFUZ-5959 to pull it out again.
