How to upgrade weapons in Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 5

All 40 NPC locations in Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 5

Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 5 is a huge step up in terms of mechanics and variety in the battle royale game. There’s a bunch of fish, 40 in fact, that you can catch. There are even 40 NPCs around handing out bounties and other stuff to do. With all of that extra stuff tacked on, new and returning players might feel a bit lost. You might also want to get into a bot lobby to try out some of the map changes and mechanics if you’re new to the game.

The game has a lot of new hidden mechanics as well. One of these is the massive collection of new gear and weapons. Fortnite has a lot weapons, too many to list here. And some of these have even come to replace the upgrade benches that older players know well. The game has seen fit to jump ahead and push a new upgrade system that involves finding the right NPC.

The weapon upgrades in Fortnite can only be accessed from a few of the new NPCs. You must find these as part of engaging with the process. Use that NPC locations map to find them if you’re having trouble. When you find one, you need to bring it Gold Bars. You can get those from the same NPC’s bounties by the way, as well as just playing the game. These can then be traded to the upgrade NPCs for various items. So far, there are only a few NPCs who can upgrade items, those are:

  • Sparkplug
  • Kondor
  • Tomato Head

A few of the NPCs will allow you to bring them a weapon in Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 5, that weapon can be upgraded along a few different lines. You can take a Common item all the way to Legendary, provided you have an absurd amount of Gold Bars.

Below, you can find the Gold cost for upgrading your weapon from one tier to the next. You also cannot skip tiers, so you have to move through each tier.

  • Common to Uncommon – 25 Gold
  • Uncommon to Rare – 50 Gold
  • Rare to Epic – 145 Gold
  • Epic to Legendary – 345 Gold
