How to unsocket Gems in Diablo 2 Resurrected

Diablo 2, being a classic CRPG, has a lot of different mechanics. If you didn’t grow up playing this game, some of them might be a bit esoteric. And even if you did play it, it may have been a long time. So in that case, let’s go over something that seems a lot of players don’t know about. Sockets and item enhancement are one of the more important areas to learn. Without properly upgraded gear, higher difficulties become much harder.

But sometimes, you need to change things up. If your gear needs a change or your want to get new stuff, you might have to remove some elements from that gear. With this guide, you will learn how to unsocket Gems in Diablo 2 Resurrected.

One thing to remember is that this process deletes gems socketed into armor, so you will lose them by doing this. With that said, here’s what to do.

Firstly, you need to have both the Socketed item and the Horadric Cube on hand. The recipe for removing a gem involves the cube, so obviously you need that first. You also need a Hel Rune. Combine the socketed item, the Hel Rune, and a scroll of town portal inside the cube.

When you have all four required items, you can place your socketed item in the Horadric Cube, along with a Scroll of Town Portal and a Hel Rune. The Cube will then transmute the items into the unsocketed version of the base item.

The Runes are one of the harder parts to get. To get it you will need to farm the Countess for the drop. The Hel Rune can only drop on Nightmare or Hell Difficulty, however. The Hellforge at the Burning Hells in Act IV can be farmed on lower difficulties, but has a pretty low drop chance. You can also make a Hel Rune from 3 Dol Runes and a Chipped Emerald via the Cube.

If you’re making gear, knowing how to socket items can really be a huge help here. We have a full guide on Runewords in D2R if you want, it can be a huge help. The D2R system requirements have also been revealed. Not that you would need to check, but it can’t hurt to be sure. There are plenty of other things to learn about in this reimagined game. The Shrines seem to be confusing some players, for example.
