How to turn off crossplay on Xbox

Xbox Series X/S’ User Experience video showcases changes

Normally, PC and console players love crossplay. The ability to expand the pool of possible players and opponents is great for the long-term health of a game. And with competitive shooters like Halo and CoD, that’s a commonly requested feature. But it’s not always a good thing. Cross-platform play for some games can cause major issues.

The recent launch of Halo Infinite‘s multiplayer mode has drawn some harsh criticism. The proliferation of cheaters on PC was immediately noticeable. Players all over PC matches were reporting aim botting and other forms of alleged cheating going on. And with the console-to-PC crossplay enabled, that means console gamers have a problem.

For some gamers, they may feel better avoiding PC players until the cheating issues are resolved. Here’s how to turn off crossplay on Xbox in all games.

It’s worth noting that this process may not work for all games. The process works on the Xbox versions of the game, and relies on the developer respecting this setting at the network level. It would seem likely that not all games can be disabled in this manner. It has been reported that Halo Infinite can have its crossplay turned off. Battlefield 2042 is having similar issues with crossplay, and you can turn it off here as well.

Also, you must be outside of a match and Xbox Live party to change this setting. Make sure to go back to the console main menu to be able to alter this setting.

  • Open Settings on the Xbox menu. Next, Account, and finally, Privacy & Online Safety
  • Select Xbox privacy.
  • Select Custom, followed by View Details and Customize.
  • Select Communication & Multiplayer.
  • Go to “You can join cross-network play” and change it from Allow to Block.

If you want to change it back and turn crossplay back on, change the above setting back to allow.
