How to make a piston and a sticky piston in Minecraft

If you’ve ever messed around with Redstone or traps in Minecraft, you’ve probably encountered dealing with either piston or a sticky piston. These two items can used in some very clever ways, all you need is a ton of Redstone and some ingenuity. Pistons in Minecraft are blocks that can push other blocks or pull them, if they are of the sticky variety. Often these are used as time interrupts within Redstone circuits or other interesting applications.

Gathering most of the resources is pretty simple. To make a Piston, you need to gather the following materials. You may use oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, dark oak, crimson, or warped wood planks for the wood.

  • 3 Wood Planks of any variety
  • 4 Cobblestone
  • 1 Iron Ingot
  • 1 Redstone Dust

The wooden planks are found by breaking down a block from a tree and crafting that into four planks. Cobblestone can be gathered by breaking stone using a pickaxe that does not have Silk Touch. Redstone dust is gathered from breaking down a redstone ore block with an iron pickaxe or better.

One of the trickier parts is getting the resources for a piston and a sticky piston in Minecraft is the Slime Balls you need for the Sticky version. You need 1 Slime Ball per Sticky Piston, so that means hunting Slimes. Hunting Slimes means going underground. They will only spawn below level 40 and appear 24 blocks away from any player. They can be found as a rare spawn in Swamp biomes, but that’s a pretty unreliable method.

Use this to your advantage and make a Slime spawning room in your mines and you can speed up the process. Otherwise, you need to prowl around underground and listen for their slapping sounds. They make a very distinct sound when hopping, learn to listen for that and take them down for a few Slime Balls.

The first step here is to make the Piston. You will need a few items first. You could of course just use Creative mode, but where’s the fun in that? The Piston and the Sticky Piston are both available in all versions of Minecraft. To make a Piston, you need to gather the following materials. You may use oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, dark oak, crimson, or warped wood planks for the wood.

  • 3 Wood Planks of any variety
  • 4 Cobblestone
  • 1 Iron Ingot
  • 1 Redstone Dust

Place the three Wood Planks on the top row of a crafting table. The Iron Ingot goes into the center slot. The Redstone goes beneath the Iron. Place the four Cobblestone into the four remaining slots. Making the Sticky Piston requires you to make the regular Piston first, so do that, then all you need is a single Slime Ball. Just put the piston in the middle slot and the slime ball in the top middle slot. That gives you one Sticky Piston.
