There are a great many hidden and unique locations in Elden Ring. As you find hidden dungeons like the Stormfoot Catacombs you’ll unlock many different items and powers. These hidden areas get much more complex as time goes on, so keep an eye out for hidden dungeons. And with many of these dungeons, comes lots of twisting questlines and story beats. You will have to take some very specific steps to finish most quests in an optimal way.
One such item affected by this design decision is the Tonic of Forgetfulness in Elden Ring. The item description hints that it was originally created by Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy to help Lady Tanith forget her horrifying memories. It can still be used for a similar purpose in the current story of the game. And it’s Lady Tanith who still has it. Here’s what you need to do to gain the Tonic of Forgetfulness in Elden Ring.
How to get the Tonic of Forgetfulness in Elden Ring
You can gain the Tonic of Forgetfulness in Elden Ring from Lady Tanith, but it takes some effort. She has a quest that you need to complete. You have to do this quest in the right order to actually get the Tonic. The quest for Lady Tanith involves taking out three specific bosses, it’s vital that you don’t rush off and kill all three bosses right away. You need to return to Rya during each phase of the quest to unlock the correct next step.
After speaking to Rya and completing the first assassination, you will get to see Rya in a new form, and it’s not pleasant. After completing the second assassination, you can return to Rya and find out about the secret wall in a nearby room. Once you do this, head through that secret passage to a new zone.
There, you need to defeat the Godskin Noble and give the Serpent’s Amnion from the altar in the boss room to Rya. Once you return to the area a final time, you will see that Rya has vanished, speak to Lady Tanith and she will give you the Tonic.
What to do with the Tonic?
Once players have acquired the Tonic of Forgetfulness key item in Elden Ring, you have a few choices to make. You can give it to one of a few different NPCs.
The first option you can pick is to do as Lady Tanith asks and give the Tonic to Rya. Rya can be found by taking the lift from the Temple of Eiglay. There’s a hidden exit that’s partway up the lift, you will have to jump off to reach it. Giving her the tonic puts her questline in a final state. Once you defeat Rykard, return to her original room in Volcano Manor to end this questline.
The other option you have is to give to another despairing NPC. Alternatively, players can attempt to give the Tonic of Forgetfulness to Brother Corhyn after finishing off the questline with Goldmask. However, Corhyn will refuse the Tonic, and it will remain in the player’s inventory. If Corhyn was offered the tonic, he will remain at Stargazer’s Ruin and won’t move to his new location at the end of the game.
