Crying Obsidian in Minecraft is something new added in the recent Nether update. The addition focused on the Nether, obviously, and it offers a bunch of new things to hunt and craft. There’s the new Ancient Debris used to make Netherite. This stuff is tougher than diamond, and it’s really useful. You can use Netherite to make tools and gear that’s very strong indeed.
Although to make those tools you first need to make the Smithing Table. But once you have all that handled, you can finally start making tools and adventuring without fear. One of the things you will find around the new biomes is potentially a ruined portal. This is the primary source for Crying Obsidian in Minecraft.
The Crying Obsidian is primarily useful for creating something called a Respawn Anchor. This new invention allows players to set their spawn within the Nether, making it easier to move around the different dimensions in the game. The fact that you need to locate a ruined portal, a naturally spawning occurrence in the game, might take some time though.
There is a small chance to have the ruined portal spawn in Bastion remnants as well. Also, you may find a Piglin with the item for barter, although that is very rare. You have better chances of finding the Crying Obsidian inside a chest in these areas than some other sources.
The Ruined Portal is an obsidian structure encased in a broken shell of smooth stone. It can spawn in any biomes, across both overworld and nether dimensions. You will need to break down the portal once you find it. The key here is having either a diamond or netherite pickaxe.
