You can purchase chickens if you need them from Marine’s ranch for 800 gold apiece. The real reason you want to invest in this upgrade is to get their eggs. The normal and large eggs sell for a good amount of gold, and can be used in various recipes. But before you start dreaming of eggs, you have some prep work to do.
One of the things you need to do first is to build a Silo. The Silo is needed to stockpile feed items for your animals, and having that first will allow you to build up your food reserves a bit. Here are the items you need to have in stock to unlock one:
- 100 G
- 100 Stone
- 10 Clay
- 5 Copper Bar
Once you have the silo built, start by planting Wheat in some plots on your farm. This will be the primary food source each day for your animals. You can also use this to feed ducks and other animals in your coops. You need to let the Wheat grow, and then harvest it with a Scythe, this will give you Hay. Hay may also be obtained by cutting weeds with a weapon enchanted with Haymaker, which gives a 33% chance to yield one unit of hay. So that’s OK for an emergency option.
The kind of building you use is a big part of planning out your farm properly. Because you’re dealing with limited space, you need to figure out what you want to build ahead of time. Once you have Hay, go into the coop itself and place the Hay in the feeding slots along the walls. When you want to feed chickens in Stardew Valley, you need to have Hay out for them to eat. Keep checking on your coops each day, and restock the Hay when it gets low. It is a very good idea to have a rotation of wheat growing each year so that you have Hay for the upcoming seasons.
If you have the silo built, the coops and barns will have hoppers in them Interact with the Hopper to get an automatic number of piles of Hay equal to the number of feeding spots. This makes things so much easier to manage.
