How to Boil Water in Project Zomboid

Project Zomboid

Project Zomboid Build 41 has changed a bunch of elements of the zombie game. When you get to play Build 41, you may notice things are changed quite a bit. The world itself is basically the same as it has always been. Players will have to survive the undead hordes and try to eek out an existence using the scraps and items they find in the world.

Trying to navigate around the undead is a ton of fun, if you don’t mind the challenge. But if you get caught, you sometimes have to heal up. You will also need to keep yourself fed and your thirst sated. That’s going to get harder as stores run out of food and the water is shut off. That point in the game is a really big difficulty spike, so you need to know how to survive.

You will need to Boil Water in Project Zomboid to do a few different tasks. This guide will cover how to take any water source and make it drinkable, dealing with one potential source of sickness in the game.

How to Boil Water in Project Zomboid

  • Put the tainted water into a cooking pot
  • Build a campfire and add fuel
  • Light the campfire using a lighter or matches
  • Place the cooking pot with water over the lit fire
  • Wait until the ‘tainted’ tag is removed from the item and take it out of the campfire

Getting Tainted Water

Tainted Water is what happens in PZ when you take any water from an open-air source. To collect tainted water from rivers or lakes, get a container of some sort and take it to the water. It’s best to use a cooking pot, but you might not have that. If you just have empty pop bottles, you can fill those as well. Just right-click the water and select the option to Fill and select a container to fill. If you need to transfer to the cooking pot from another container, you can right-click the Pot and fill it with your filled water bottles.

You will now have a cooking pot filled with water. It’s undrinkable as long as it’s marked with (Tainted), so you need to boil it first. But first, we need a heat source. In most cases, that’s going to be a campfire.

When you’re ready to begin, it’s best to start by gathering the materials to make a Campfire. You need to assemble a Campfire Kit using Three Planks and one unit of kindling. You can use Bandages, sheets or any other flammable item. if you don’t have Planks, Logs work too. Once you have assembled it, you’re ready to begin.

To deploy the campfire kit on the ground, right-click to bring up the interaction menu and select Build a fire. You can now select where you want to place it.

Putting it all together

Once you have the overall structure of the campfire and the filled cooking pot, you can finally begin to boil water. Walk over to the lit campfire and click on it to interact with it.

After you place the pot of tainted water in the campfire inventory using the Put in Container dropdown, you just have to wait a bit. Now, open up the inventory for the campfire by moving your cursor to the top of the screen to click the button that leads to it. Click the button on the right-hand side to open up the campfire, you will see the pot of water inside. Just wait for the bar to fill up, showing it in red, and you will have boiled water.

Once the water has finished boiling, it’s now ready to drink.
