To start you need to focus on having OK stats. The better your Brain score is, the more reliably you can commit some complex crimes. When you become 18 years old, click on the “Occupation” tab, there will be a Special Careers category in that menu. Within that menu will be various specialized crimes you can commit. Get more criminal experience by committing more crimes. Eventually, you will build up a big enough reputation to join the family you desire.

Here are the six criminal empires you can join:

  • The Irish Mob
  • The Latin Mafia
  • The Mafia
  • The Russian Mob
  • The Triad
  • The Yakuza

Getting into one of these will depend on where you’re located, and your criminal chops. The more potential you have to earn for the family, the better your chances of getting in.

Joining the Mafia is the easy part though, it’s the promotions within the lifestyle that are much harder. Rob banks and commit more crimes once you’re in to further build your rep. The next phase is to build up reputation and friendships with certain members. Don’t go overboard, get too friendly and you could be seen as a rat. Make a few friends and keep earning money. Eventually, you’ll be asked to become the underboss.

You might also have to wack mafia members to get them out of the way. If you sniff out a rat, it’s a good idea to take them out when you get the opportunity. This can also help deal with rats, who can seriously threaten your progress.
