Devolver Digital, perennial brokers of weird and brilliant games, are back once again to show off something new. Well OK, it’s actually just a re-released port for the Switch, but it’s still pretty awesome. This time, they’re teaming up with Dennaton Games to release Hotline Miami Collection on the Switch.
This bundle will include Hotline Miami and Hotline Miami 2 all in one package for around 20 bucks, not a bad deal. So what is the Hotline Miami franchise? Let’s find out.
Hotline Miami offers a very simple setup, kill literally everyone. Problem is, they’re going to be trying to kill you too. It’s this conflict that takes the game into a technocolor nightmare of slaughter that’s both horrifying and fun to play. As you start to suss out the optimal paths in each level, the game throws more challenging scenarios at you in a high-stakes and high-speed gauntlet of violence.
One could almost be forgiven for taking this game as some kind of over-the-top satire of violence in media, much like some more generous takes of the Final Destination films ascribe. It’s this cold and calculated path to mass-murder that almost echoes some very cynical and unfortunately poignant ideas about human experience. But even if you ignore that angle, it’s still a fun puzzle game that happens to be soaked in gore.
