Hollow Knight has cancelled its physical release

Hollow Knight

Team Cherry and their smash-hit Hollow Knight received a lot of praise and a growing fanbase. The metroidvania game holds a unique art style and tons of interesting gameplay elements. The game features “The Knight” adventuring in the darkness and beast-infested while exploring ruins and other dangerous areas. Along the way, players increase their abilities with new loot like Charms, Crests and various Shards and Blessings. It’s incredibly bizarre creatures each have their own unique gameplay mechanics, and the bosses are extremely tough, but still fun to fight. It’s one of those must-play games for any fans of the genre.

Beneath the fading town of Dirtmouth sleeps an ancient, forgotten kingdom. Now something awakes within the ruins, a powerful force that turns bugs mad and robs travellers of their senses. Many are drawn beneath the surface searching for riches, or glory, or answers to old secrets.

What is the source of this new plague? What calamity befell this once great kingdom? To solve these mysteries will require a journey into the deepest depths, but some secrets may be better left buried…

Originally announced in August 2018, Team Cherry teamed up with Skybound Games to produce a physical version of Hollow Knight, including all of the expansion content, for PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.

Over the last week, those plans changed for the worst when Team Cherry admitted defeat, and cancelled the physical release entirely. Going into more detail, the small team admitted that they simply couldn’t handle the increasing workload, even with the support from partner Skybound Games. Team Cherry announced the cancellation of the widespread physical release on their website. Skybound and Team Cherry both confirmed the announcement via Twitter. Team Cherry is currently looking for “other ways to deliver physical versions of Hollow Knight,” though whatever the developers eventually produce will be available in much smaller quantities than this Skybound Games physical release would have been.

Hollow Knight is currently available digitally for Switch, Xbox One, PS4, Windows PCs, Linux and Mac.
