H1Z1 goes free to play later today as the battle royale genre gets crowded

Starting today, zombie-infested H1Z1 is being made Free-to-Play by Daybreak Games. Daybreak is also following the example of the Overwatch League, and has announced a competitive League for H1Z1. The inaugural season will feature 15 different teams.

“We are very excited to announce that H1Z1 will be free to play starting today. Not only does this decision allow us to share our version of Battle Royale and Auto Royale with even more players, but it signifies the next step in making H1Z1 a must-watch esport”, said Anthony Castoro, H1Z1 General Manager. “The Pro League is going to redefine esports when it kicks off in Las Vegas this April, and whether a person is an aspiring pro athlete or just wants to play with friends, we want everyone to have the chance to play the most competitive battle royale game.”

H1Z1 seems to be pulling out all the stops in order to remain competitive with other titles in the increasingly crowded Battle Royale genre. They have a tough road ahead with titles like Fortnite and PUBG being monstrously successful.

Anyone who bought H1Z1 on Steam can request a refund and they should be eligible to receive one.
