Greedfall gameplay trailer and more details revealed
The dark and gritty nature of the 17th century isn’t an era of history that’s often the domain of video games. Aside from militaristic strategy games, the time of Mercantalism and formative early Baroque culture doesn’t get too much of an examination from the interactive medium, that’s about to change with a new game. Publisher Focus Home Interactive and developer Spiders have finally dropped more details about their new project, Greedfall.
The game is set in that somewhat forgotten and mysterious time popularized by the death of Queen Elizabeth I and the infamous Gunpowder plot, is just the beginning of the historical significance of these 100 years. The focus of Greedfall though is much tighter than just general historical fiction. The game centers its plot on the early colonization of the Americas, and the brutal and destructive years that followed.

The gameplay itself blends RPG elements with some degree of exploration to aid with the immersion within the subject matter. While this new video game isn’t trying to be too educational, it wants to ground a difficult subject like colonialism in a believable and digestible coating, well as believable as magical fantasy can be. It’s a unique idea, although it remains to be seen how this all works out.
And in case you were wondering, Spiders made a few things clear about the PC release of their new game. Focus Home Interactive and Spiders have revealed some more information, particularly about the backend of the game. For one thing, Greedfall will not be an exclusive to any storefront. So that’s great for starters, but there’s even more good news.
That’s because the game will not be making use of the popular but highly controversial Denuvo software as a DRM solution. We’ve seen this solution in many games, both AAA and indie, over the last few years. And despite the popularity, it’s plagued with problems. Crackers often make it their mission to crack this protection as a matter of pride, and they often succeed within days. Developers will also often patch out the protection after this happens, as the software is also blamed for performance problems.
There’s some bad news though, as the developer has revealed that the game will not be getting official mod support, so take that for what you will.
Greedfall is out on September 10th for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. You can find more information on the official website.
