Gearbox and Blackbird Interactive announce Homeworld 3

Homeworld 3

It’s official, a new staple of the RTS genre is coming, Homeworld 3 has been confirmed. The game is already in the works, although it’s still very early in production. The teamis planning to raise funds via crowdfunding to push work forward, and it looks like that plan is working.

As of now, the project has been wildly successful raising funds for development via Fig. As of writing the project has received $398,590 from a total of 2,206 backers.

The developers plan to push out regular updates with development moving forward. A part of this will involve directly asking backers what they would like to see in this latest entry in the iconic franchise. As they put it on the fundraiser:

The campaign will allow longtime Homeworld fans to become investors in Fig and participate in the game’s future success. Additionally, investments and pledges will provide a chance to tell the developers what they expect of Homeworld 3 via a backer-only survey. This survey would include things such as its features, priorities, and even what the collector’s edition will include.

A big part of the franchise that the developers are hoping to recapture is the look and feel of that fans have fallen for over the years. The game is making use of some talent to get this done too. As they put it:

We aim to nail that incredible scale of space and conflict and deliver a powerful story that picks up just at the end of Homeworld 2. For music, Paul Ruskay reprises his role as composer to ensure we nail the iconic soundscape that fans remember. Of course, Homeworld 3 will deliver best-in-class fleet combat in fully-3D space.

The effort as a whole seems like it’s in good hands in more ways than just creative direction. Teams from Gearbox and BBI will be working on the project in different capacities, offering their insight on how to deliver the game that fans want. And with these same folks having been involved intimately with 2015’s Homeworld Remastered Collection and 2016’s Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak, it looks like it’s going to go very well.

Homeworld 3 has an estimated release date of Q4 2022, expect more news over the next few months. Until then, tide yourself over with the little trailer for the game, which can be seen down below.
