Gamescom 2020 is “continuing as planned”

Gamescom 2020

According to a new announcement, Gamescom 2020 is “continuing as planned” this year. This comes as events around the globe are canceled or rescheduled and governments are advising against gathering in public, including taking extreme quarantine procedures like shutting down public spots and restaurants.

The event will be held in Cologne, Germany, on August 25th and hopefully will take some extra precautions. The organizers have said they are working on plans and that they “take[s] this topic very seriously because the health of all trade fair visitors and partners is our top priority.” The state government has banned all events in the city that will see a footfall of more than 1,000 people until April 10. “Since gamescom takes place at the end of August 2020, we are currently not affected by this decree,” explained the statement. “However, we will of course follow the recommendations of the responsible authorities regarding major events, evaluate them on a daily basis and make our decisions after careful consideration.”

The organizers are clearly banking on the crisis having been contained by the time that the event rolls around, which is not a certainty. Current wisdom suggests that potentially upwards of millions of people remain undiagnosed or asymptomatic across the globe, and that could lead to a major resurgence. There is a chance that with proper containment and precautions, the instances of community spread for COVID-19 and other diseases can be reduced, but it’s not guaranteed.

WHO recommendations also make it clear that cold weather has no impact on the virus or its spread, although there is some evidence to suggest that certain types of viral infections are slowed by warm and extremely humid weather, as the environmental conditions in such areas are not conducive to viral stability.

There is no reason to believe that cold weather can kill the new coronavirus or other diseases. The normal human body temperature remains around 36.5°C to 37°C, regardless of the external temperature or weather. The most effective way to protect yourself against the new coronavirus is by frequently cleaning your hands with alcohol-based hand rub or washing them with soap and water.

So considering this, it is kind of a gamble to say that the event is going ahead, as the situation could certainly change.
