Final Fantasy XVI’s development delayed by at least six months

It’s been a while since we heard anything about Final Fantasy XVI,  and it looks like no news is good news in this case. The reveal of the big new sequel happened earlier this year. The game hasn’t been seen since the reveal back in October, and fans are starting to get worried. Producer Naoki Yoshida announced that the next major reveal for the upcoming title — originally promised for sometime in 2021 — is now being pushed out to sometime in spring 2022.

The development of Final Fantasy XVI has been pushed back by at least six months, due to various technical issues. Studios and teams working on the game have been doing their best, but times are tough. Yoshida claims that the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has been a primary cause of these issues. The biggest problem this has caused is getting assets and tasks done on time.

“In an effort to offset the effects of COVID-19, we’ve had to decentralize that workforce by permitting staff to tackle their assignments from home,” Yoshida’s letter explains. “This has unfortunately hampered communication from the Tokyo office, which, in turn, has led to delays in — or in extreme cases, cancellations of — asset deliveries from our outsource partners.”

The team has been working throughout the year to smooth over these issues. They will need a few months to catch up on the backlog, and to polish the existing assets and game elements. it could be we won’t see the new game until next Summer, depending on how all of this goes.

Final Fantasy XV was a nightmare to get made, and the game suffered immensely for it. The disjointed development of what would eventually become the story of Noctis and pals led to a messy game. Sure, some fans enjoyed it for what it was, but it could have been so much better. It has been five years since that game debuted, and fans are hungry for more. Hopefully, Square Enix can avoid the mistakes of the past and deliver a true sequel worthy of the franchise. With stellar efforts on projects like Final Fantasy VII Remake, times are looking up.
