In an interview, director Naoki Yoshida has said that Square Enix and the development team behind the MMO has not “considered releasing” Final Fantasy XIV on Xbox Game Pass. “I haven’t really considered releasing FFXIV on Game Pass,” Yoshida has shared with Twinfinite. “This is because FFXIV itself is a subscription-model game.”
The whole thing does make sense though. The idea that the company would release a paid MMO for free via Game Pass is kind of weird, and would likely anger many fans. This could also lead to drop in revenue as fans switch over to the Xbox Game Pass version.
Of course, it does not mean that a version of the MMO could not be coming to the Xbox side of things. Sony is already working with Square Enix on a port of Final Fantasy XIV for the PS5. There’s some chance that Microsoft could get a port going for the Xbox Series X. And while such a port has not been confirmed, fans remain hopeful it will one day materialize.
The director of Final Fantasy XIV said that “Phil [Spencer] is very dedicated in his support for FFXIV, and I truly appreciate his efforts.”Going further, Yoshida says that there is some opportunity for the companies to work together if the stars align and things get easier. “I hope that one day, Phil and I can stand shoulder to shoulder and create an opportunity for gamers around the world to enjoy FFXIV even more,” he added.
A new Final Fantasy game, Final Fantasy VII Remake, is releasing this week on the PS4, bringing fans a new injection of fun from the classic RPG franchise.
