Fallout 76 won’t allow you to respec SPECIAL stats

A Twitter question has uncovered a potential hangup for some users when it comes to character customization in Fallout 76. In simple terms, you cannot change your base SPECIAL stats once they are set at character creation, which means there’s no such than thing as respecs in Fallout 76.

For those not in the know, SPECIAL stats are Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and Luck. Each of these will control multiple gameplay aspects like your HP pool, the amount of damage you do, as well as how defensive your character is. Not having respecs means that you’ll need to pay special attention to your character build to make sure your stats are balanced with your strengths or desired gameplay style.

This is a significant departure from previous games in the franchise, which often allowed players to change their stats assuming certain requirements were met. Although it’s easy to understand why this change was made. Since the game is entirely focused on multiplayer experiences and PvP balancing, disallowing respecs will hopefully address a variety of potential unbalancing meta-game quirks, as well as any potential game-breaking exploits. This should make the wastes of West Virginia a little less insane, at least a bit.

Fallout 76 will launch on November 14 for PC. The beta begins on October 30 for those who pre-order the game.
