Dragon Quest Heroes 3 would have to evolve, but the team is not sure how

Dragon Quest Heroes 3

A Dragon Quest Heroes 3 game could happen, but there is a lot of work left to be done. The prospect of a new game in the franchise is something the team finds exciting, but it’s a goal that they’re not sure how to reach. director Tomohiko Sho said as much during a recent interview with Nintendo Everything.

Dragon Quest Heroes is a complex series. It was such a drastic alteration of the core franchise that the team behind it made a ton of design decisions which fundamentally altered the experience. The recent sequel continued that trend, evolving the game in many different ways. The changes were so intense and different that the team is unsure what else to put in to improve the game. Most importantly of all, the developer wants to keep players interested in the premise, but they’re not sure how to do that.

“So we’ve been talking a little about maybe putting out a third entry, but really the big thing is between 1 and 2, there were so many improvements made,” he explained. “If we were going to go from 2 to 3, what else can we put in to really impress the players who played both games that will get them really excited and really emotionally moved by it?” Sho also said that the newest game in the series would need significant reworks in other areas to make a third game work. And that these practical and creative issues would manifest as “a lot of hurdles”.

The team at Omega Force is pretty talented, as evidenced by their previous games being so good. But Dragon Quest Heroes is such a unique problem that they’re not sure how to innovate on it. The team are “not sure how” they would evolve the experience, although they want to make another game. The interview also clarified a crucial point, Omega Force isn’t in the drivers seat here. Obviously this is a Square Enix property so we can’t really say anything, but I have kind of mentioned to them before, ‘Shouldn’t we consider a third entry?’” So whether or not a new game happens isn’t really their call. If the fans want it though, I’m sure Square Enix will eventually listen if enough of that interest is made clear.

Dragon Quest Heroes 2 is out now for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
