Diablo 3: Rainbow Goblin Farming Guide

How to get access to Whimsydale and Whimsyshire in Diablo 3

Whimsydale and Whimsyshire are two secret zones built into the map of Diablo 3. The dev team created the two easter eggs in direct response to player complaints, mocking those who thought the game was too colorful compared to previous games. The two zones are a very bright and cheery area, in direct contrast to the rest of the game. The two zones have their own access paths, and Whimsydale is the more difficult one to get to.

The clouds and other loot sources in Whimsydale are a great source of Gems, Gold and Rare items. Rainbow Goblins are the key to getting into this valuable zone. There are also a couple of bosses that you need to take out to get unique cosmetics. This is the only way to access the secret level which contains a very rare cosmetic item, the Cosmic Wings. Cosmic Wings drop from the unique monster Princess Lilian. She can only be found in Whimsydale, the rarer of the two easter egg zones. Sir William drops the Rainbow Portrait, and only spawns in the Whimsyshire variant.

To get to this zone, you need to hunt down a bunch of Rainbow Goblin spawns. These blue goblins are very hard to find. There are a bunch of restrictions on where they can spawn, but they also have to compete with the other goblins that may spawn in that instance.

Best ways to find the Rainbow Goblin

The best way to hit these little buggers is to use Adventure mode. These goblins have a bright blue color to them, so they’re easy to spot. You might also want to turn your audio up to make sure you hear that distinctive laugh that goblins have when they spawn. Other than that, it’s really down to luck. Just keep running the highest level Bounties in Adventure Mode until you get the spawns.

A few things to remember, is that the name of the game is speed and efficiency here. Rainbow Goblins only really consistently spawn in Adventure, though they have a slim chance to spawn in Story mode. Also, if you spawn multiple Rainbow Goblins in the same game, all Rainbow Portals lead to the same instance of Whimsydale.

There are also a few other restrictions to keep in mind. Rainbow Goblins cannot spawn in:

    • Greater Rifts
    • Nephalem Rifts
    • The Vault
    • Bandit Shrines

What about Bounties?

While it’s definitely true that Bounties in the Tormen difficulties remain the best way to farm any item or spawn, their kind of hard to get to. T16 missions are some of the toughest content in the game, and you need a perfected build that’s able to deal with the mass of monsters to handle them. Newer players in particular don’t have this option.

If you’re later into the game and just after Gems and Gold, the Rainbow Goblin is not the ideal target. In short, if you can run Torment 16 Bounties, do those. Not only are the Horadric chests a far better source of crafting materials, but the loot is just better.
